Fringe is life.

Fringe is life.

I had many titles for this blog post:

Fringe outfits will never die.
Fringe is the gift that keeps on giving.
My love affair with Fringe.
Fringe is the best dance partner.
Give me all the fringe.
You fringe, I fringe we all fringe for fringe. (OK, this one is excessive.)
I love fringe more than chocolate. (Which may be an over statement.)
Fringe is the best clothing. (To the point.)

In all seriousness though, who in the world doesn’t love a little fringe? Maybe there’s some fringe Grinch out there that says, “fringe sucks.” But I’d say that is highly unlikely. And if there is, I’d love to meet that person, have them put on a fringe piece, and watch their face light up as they move around in it. Fringe is the embellishment that will always bring joy. This lovely little detail adds so much grace and movement to a piece. It adds an air of elegance and sass to even the most denying of wearers.

The thing I love most about fringe is that it represents an age of women’s liberation. It first came on the fashion scene in the 1920’s – when skirts got shorter, women got more daring, and the feminist movement was born. Flappers were the ultimate first feminists, in my opinion. They celebrated female sexuality AND the liberty to be as men do – to demand equality; demand the right to be exactly who they are with the same rights and freedoms. They didn’t sacrifice femininity for equality.

Now, fringe was originally a functional embellishment used by the Native Americans as a way to repel rain, but this style was highly admired and adopted in the 1960s and, again, became a symbol of liberated thought, rejection of the norms, and humanitarian action. Fringe not only makes you feel free, it’s truly the representation of freedom. (What can I say, Fringe is a bold embellishment and deserves a bold explanation.)

Since fringe metaphorically drank from the fountain of youth, a.k.a. never dying, it’s safe to say you should most definitely have an item or two with this idealistic adornment. Here’s a few tips on how to wear it:

  1. Don’t over do it. If you want to wear two pieces of fringe at once, keep it to an article of clothing and an accessory, such as a purse or shoes.

  2. Sequence and fringe IS mutually exclusive. A rodeo is the ONLY place two wear both at the same time. (Metallic fringe is a different story, which you can see above. It’s fabulous and I need it.)

  3. Everyone should own both a fringe skirt AND a fringe jacket. If anything, these are the two pieces of fringe clothing that can be worn over-and-over again and never get old. It will transcend the ideal of trends.

  4. Pair it with statement jewelry. How ‘bout some layered chains, perhaps. 😉 Click here to shop.
